CIPD Centres Conference - Keele 2011 28-Jun-11

The Bradfield Group attended the CIPD Annual Centre's Conference in Keele last week, with Joseph Grech, L&D Manager at Bradfield, being an invited speaker on the panel "Delivering the CIPD's Qualifications Internationally".

This year's conference focused on the collective roles that accredited centres have in building the current and future capability of the HR profession. With sessions from the likes of Stephanie Bird, Director of HR Capability, CIPD; Perry Timms, The Big Lottery Fund; and Dr Julie Beardwell Chief Moderator, Standards, CIPD, the conference covered a variety of areas, with a range of providers from both the private and higher education centre in attendance.

Staged over three days at Keel University, there were sessions dealing with areas such as assessment, quality assurance and learning tools. There was noticeable attention on social media in the case of the later, speakers focusing its uses to expand learning and development opportunities for students and organisations alike.

"In between sessions there were networking opportunities for speakers and attendees alike, which lead to some passionate debate about some of the new measures that have been introduced by the CIPD since the last conference, with a lot of conversations based on how the CIPD HR Profession Map can be applied to get the most benefits for practitioners at all levels of the industry" says Patrick Mullarkey, Learning & Development Consultant.

During the international session chaired by Debbie John, Head of Qualifications at the CIPD, Joseph Grech helped the panel provide an overview of the Bradfield Group's wealth of experience of providing CIPD courses overseas and some of the issues to consider when providing qualifications to students. The session allowed an opportunity for questions from the audience, which then stimulated ideas as to best practice and some of the pitfalls to be aware of, drawing a lot from Bradfield's experience of providing courses in the Gulf region.

In all the conference was highly informative with a variety of benefits and insights provided, with the international session receiving very positive feedback from the panel and attendees alike.

Bradfield´s first student to achieve Post Graduate CIPD success 03-Dec-10

Jane Moss has just received her Post Graduate Certificate in HR from the CIPD. She is our first student to obtain a qualification at this level with Bradfield. "We are so pleased for Jane" said Caroline Griffiths, Managing Director of Bradfield Group. These qualifications are at Level 7 and represent about half of the PDS qualification.

Naturally Jane is also delighted. Of her learning experience she said "Studying for a CIPD qualification with Bradfield meant that I could study flexibly around my job and home life but also have tutor support and attend knowledge sessions locally. I received the latest copies of the CIPD materials and study books to assist me through the units. With support and encouragement from my tutor, I developed the skill of writing in an academic manner whilst gaining confidence in my ever growing knowledge. It was hard work returning to study but the achievement is both satisfying and rewarding".

CIPD Professional Standards Conference By Linda Baird 01-Aug-10

The conference was designed around building current and future capability for the HR Profession. It was designed to give insight into the latest thinking of what tomorrow's workplace might look like and provide delegates with ideas of how they can drive the agenda forward for the future.

As Joseph and I were two new recruits to Bradfield we booked ourselves back to back on courses that we believed we could add real value to you, our customers. We had dreams and visions of applying our new learning when designing, implementing and improving the quality of training offered at Bradfield. We also wanted to be key in bringing innovation and value to you all. With such high hopes and dreams, what did we learn?

Well, the list of speakers was impressive. With the changes to the new qualifications we attended the majority of sessions on the changes for centres, providers and customers.

Jackie Orme, Chief Executive of the CIPD and Stephanie Bird, Director of HR Capability, CIPD talked about the work the CIPD have undertaken in collaboration with centres since last year's conference, how the qualifications and membership changed, what their priorities are for the year ahead. This was a good overview at the start of a fully packed conference.

The most impressive session was that on blended learning and how training delivery has changed from use of the flipchart and overhead projector to embrace the use of IT. So watch this space, there may be podcasts, webinars and other technology based training coming your way as part of our strategy for training delivery.

My HR Map is a new online self-assessment tool for members, based on the CIPD HR Profession Map. In this interactive session we were shown how to use My HR Map to assess capability against the relevant activities, knowledge and behaviours. It was interesting to note that the HR Profession Map is not in full operation yet and we were able to put forward recommendations for development. This was a useful session as Joseph and I posed many questions and solutions for development which were highly welcomed. We are watching this space...

The CIPD is embracing more flexible assessment strategies for the new qualifications, including using a mixture of competency assessment and traditional taught elements. In a session, Professor Garnett spoke about the use of work-based learning as a way of offering greater flexibility for today's learners without the loss of academic rigour. This was an interesting session as it reflected on learning in the workplace as being important, not new and more about engaging with learning in the workplace.

Wanting to have a say in what the CIPD are planning, Joseph and I were keen to share our thoughts, inspirations and visions so at the session Journey of Transformation for Membership and What the Future Holds in terms of New Developments and Initiatives, we had front row seats.

In the free time that we had, we managed to fit in networking as well. It really was a delight to meet CIPD personnel as well as our passionate HR and training colleagues.

In all, the conference was extremely valuable and left us feeling very motivated to use our creativity in the months ahead to make the student experience as valuable as we possibly can.
